Tibetan Cancer Society observes the World Cancer Day with its signature campaign

Dharamshala, India — Tibetan Cancer Society organizes an event to raise awareness of the public on cancer detection cum prevention and treatment at McLeod Ganj Main Square, Dharamshala on February 4, 2021. This event was organized on the occasion of World Cancer Day and involves a signature campaign and H-Pylori stool test to prevent stomach cancer.

Choekyong Wangchuk, Health Minister of Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) inaugurated the event along with Acharya Yeshi Phuntsok, Deputy Speaker of Tibetan Parliament -in-exile (TPiE) and Dawa Phunkyi, Director of Delek Hospital, Dharamshala. Dr Gurdarshan Gupta, Chief Medical Officer, Kangra also graced the occasion and Presidents of various NGOs participated in the same.

“The signature campaign aims to spread awareness about cancer prevention and treatment among all communities,” said Tsulttrim Dorjee, Director of Tibetan Cancer Society. “In our community, stomach cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers, therefore we are conducting H-Pylori stool test to prevent stomach cancer in the future,”, he added.

As a part of this event, the H-Pylori stool test was conducted free of cost from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and was open to everyone. Additionally, free distribution of 10,000 masks was also carried out during this event to combat the deadly coronavirus.

Tibetan Cancer Society is a non-governmental organization working with the aim of controlling cancer by generating cancer awareness programmes and cancer detection programmes among the Tibetan community. They conduct cancer awareness programmes by organizing various campaigns. They invite renowned oncologists and other medical experts to the Tibetan community, schools, settlements, institutes and monasteries for better awareness. In addition, they organize cancer screenings to detect cancer and save lives as cancer is curable when detected in early stages.

World Cancer Day is celebrated globally every year on February 4. It is a global uniting initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). Each year, hundreds of activities and events take place around the world, in the streets and online, acting as a powerful reminder that we all have a role to play in reducing the impact of cancer.
