Dharamshala — Tibetan President Dr Lobsang Sangay on Friday offered sincere condolences over the terrorist attacks in Spain and expressed profound sympathy with the victims of the horrific attacks.
Dr Sangay on August 18, 2017,conveyed sympathy and support to the people of Spain, families and friends of the victims and wished a speedy recovery of those injured.
"I express my profound sympathy and condolences to the victims of the terrorist attack in Spain yesterday. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Spain," said Dr Lobsang Sangay, the President of Central Tibetan Administration.
"Spain has long been a friend of the Tibetan people and we stand in solidarity with you as you recover from this brutal attack on innocent civilians and tourists," he said, according to the official website of the CTA.
"While we mourn, let us remember the wise words of His Holiness the Dalai Lama who champions the concept of oneness of humanity, and love and wellbeing for all. It's the responsibility of each and every one of us to make our society more humane, and more just," he said.
"Let's learn to listen to each other again, to respect each other's weaknesses. Above all, lets remember that violence is not the solution to resolve conflicts. I pray that peace and harmony will once again reign the beautiful cities of Barcelona and Cambrils ," he said.
At least 13 people were killed and 100 injured in two subsequent terrorist attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils in Spain.
On August 17, 2017, a vehicle plowed into crowds of people in the Catalan resort town of Cambrils, about 100 kilometers southwest of Barcelona. The five alleged terrorists armed with knives were taken down by Catalan police in a shootout.
Hours earlier, a car drove into pedestrians in the La Rambla street area in downtown Barcelona. The double attacks left 14 people dead and more than 100 others injured.
Spanish police have classified the incident as a terrorist attack. The incident took place at the height of the tourist season in Barcelona, which is one of Europe's top travel destinations with at least 11 million visitors a year.
The Barcelona attack was the deadliest in Spain since March 2004, when terrorists placed bombs on commuter trains in Madrid, killing 191 people and wounding more than 1,800.
