Dharamshala — In remembrance of the demonstrators who were killed in the 1989 protests in Tibet, the Tibetan government-in-exile organized a prayer service this morning, March 8th.
The hour long service, held by the Department of Religion and Culture of the Central Tibetan Administration, comes just 26 years after Chinese authorities declared martial law and opened fire on protests, killing hundreds of peaceful Tibetan demonstrators. The demonstrations began after a group of monks, nuns, and laypeople took to the streets to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day.
Sikyong Dr Lobsang Sangay, the democratically elected political leader of the Tibetan people, attended the prayer service along with the members of Kashag, Tibetan Parliamentarians, Tibetan Justice Commissioners, Tibetan civil servants, monks of Namgyal Monastery and the local Tibetan community.
The prayer service is held annually on March 8th to remember and pay tribute to those Tibetans who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the greater cause of Tibet.
