Dharamshala — On behalf of the Central Tibetan Administration and the Tibetan people, Sikyong Dr Lobsang Sangay on Tuesday condoled the demise of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayaram Jayalalithaa, describing her as one of the most prominent woman leaders in India.
In his condolence message, Sikyong said: "I, on behalf of the Central Tibetan Administration and the Tibetan people, express my profound condolences at the sad demise of Shmt Jayalalitha, chief minister of Tamil Nadu."
"Jayalalitha was known for her strong resilience and powerful connection with the masses, which have earned her the epithet 'Amma' from the people of Tamil Nadu."
"She was also one of the most prominent woman leaders in India and was a symbol of strength in a male-dominated profession like politics. From a prolific actress to the highest echelon of Tamil Nadu politics, she has overcome great obstacles and has been an inspiration for many."
"Her leadership was particularly marked by a history of effusive commitments to the welfare of the public through schemes such as free medical check-ups and a personal emphasis on primary education and nutrition."
"I extend my profound condolences to the people of Tamil Nadu and her party, AIADMK, at this time of grief and wish you all best for the state's future," Sikyong said.
Jayalalitha passed away in Chennai's Apollo Hospital late on Monday night. She was 68. Jayalalithaa was declared dead at 11:30pm last night. Apollo Hospital in its statement said, "With indescribable grief, we announce the sad demise of our esteemed honourable chief minister of Tamil Nadu Puratchi Thalaivi Amma at 11:30 PM today, 5-12-2016."
Jayalalitha, the actress-turned-politician who served four terms as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for over fourteen years between 1991 and 2016.
