Mexico — A group of Mexican parliamentarians formed a new parliamentary group called "Friends of Tibet" in Mexico on November 8, 2022. Tibetan leaders expressed their gratitude to them and said, "With this new group, we can collaborate for the just cause of Tibet in Latin America. The support of each honourable member is precious to us."
The Mexican Congress led by Deputy Salvador Caro Cabrera launched the "Friends of Tibet" in Congress. The session started with the presentation of the members of the legislative group, followed by the proposal and election of the composition of the board of directors, the installation and the beginning of the group of legislators friends of Tibet. The technical secretariat was introduced and voted on, and the installation of the Friends of Tibet group was declared open.
The representative of the Tibet Office for Latin America, Jigme Tsering, read out letters from Speaker Khenpo Sonam Tenphel of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile and Sikyong Penpa Tsering of the Central Tibetan Administration, welcoming the formation of the Friends of Tibet parliamentary group in the Mexican Congress.
Sikyong wrote, “I am delighted to learn of the official installation of the Group of Legislators Friends of Tibet. I express my deep gratitude on behalf of the Central Tibetan Administration and the Tibetan people for this significant and timely initiative and congratulate all its members.”
“Today, the critical situation inside Tibet is further exacerbated by the repressive policies of the Chinese government aimed at eradicating the very identity of the Tibetan people. At such a time, the news of the formal establishment of the group is highly welcomed,” he added and thanked all the group members while extending them his best wishes for all its future undertaking.
The Speaker wrote, “We are delighted to learn about the success in establishing the group of legislators friends of Tibet in Mexico.”
“I would like to thank you and all the members of the Group on behalf of the Tibetans and Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile. I am certain that with this new group we can collaborate for the just cause of Tibet in Latin America. The support of each honorable member is valuable to us,” he added.
“We also have individual supporters and friends in Mexico who have stood by us for a long time. I would also like to thank them through this,” the Speaker concluded.
Representative Jigme Tsering briefed MPs on the current human rights situation in Tibet, the Middle Way Approach proposed by the Tibetan Government in Exile and referred to the illustrious Mexicans who in the past decided to help and protect those in need despite external pressure.
Afterwards, Friends of Tibet deputies, led by Salvador Caro Cabrera, and guests led by Marco Antonio Karam, president and founder of Casa Tibet Mexico, Tereluz Flores, coordinator for Latin America of the International Tibet Network, Raymundo Zaldivar coordinator of the Tibet MX support group, and Jesús Olivares, counsellor of Tibet Mx, gave a press conference at which Salvador Caro Cabrera formally announced the founding of the Friends of Tibet group in the Mexican Congress.
