Dharamshala — His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet, wrote to Jose Ramos-Horta to congratulate him on his election as President of Timor-Leste and said, “A great responsibility now lies ahead of you once more and I trust that under your leadership the people of Timor-Leste will continue to enjoy peace, prosperity and progress. I particularly hope that you will be able to improve the lives of the less fortunate members of society.”

After the recent election of Jose Ramos-Horta as President of East Timor, His Holiness the Dalai Lama wrote to congratulate him on April 28, 2022.

“It has been a privilege to have known you for so many years,” His Holiness’s letter continued, “beginning with your visits here to Dharamshala in the early 1990s," His Holiness said.

“A great responsibility now lies ahead of you once more and I trust that under your leadership the people of Timor-Leste will continue to enjoy peace, prosperity and progress. I particularly hope that you will be able to improve the lives of the less fortunate members of society," the Nobel laureate said.

“With my prayers and good wishes for your success in meeting the challenges that lie ahead in fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of the people of Timor-Leste," the spiritual leader of Tibet concluded.

Jose Ramos-Horta is 72 years old. He served as foreign minister and prime minister of East Timor, then as the country's second president from 2007 to 2012.

He was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996 for his efforts to bring a peaceful resolution to a guerrilla war in East Timor against Indonesia's occupation of the former Portuguese colony.
