The spiritual leader of Tibet and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, His Holiness the Dalai Lama is among the top 10 list of World’s Most Admired People according to the online survey conducted by the YouGov. The list of most admired people was published on Wednesday which was categorized into top 10 men and top 10 women.
While the top spot with 9.9 percent admiration share of the list taken by Tech pioneer and philanthropist Bill Gates in the men category while actor Angelina Jolie holds the top spot with 8.2 percent admiration share in the women category. Gates is trailed by former US president Barack Obama and then Chinese actor Jackie Chan while Jolie is trailed by former US first lady Michele Obama and then Oprah Winfrey.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama has climbed up by one spot in the list to become the top seventh world’s most admire person with a 3.9 percent share of admiration in the survey. The Tibetan spiritual leader is followed by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi with 3.9 percent share of admiration further followed by veteran Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan with 3.1 percent share of admiration.
Entertainers dominate the female top twenty, with 14 of the most admired women being actresses, singers or TV presenters (although some, like Emma Watson and Angelina Jolie, are also notable for their humanitarian work). By contrast, the list of most admired men contains more people from political, business and sporting backgrounds.
“In December YouGov gathered open-ended nominations from panellists across 35 countries, asking them simply: “Thinking about people alive in the world today, which [man or woman] do you most admire?” These nominations were then used to compile a list of the 20 men and 20 women who received the most nominations and were nominated in at least four countries.” explained the YouGov that added that it interviewed more than 37,000 people to compile the list.
In the list for women most admired, the survey ranked Jolie at the top, followed by former US First Lady Michelle Obama, TV personality Oprah Winfrey, Queen Elizabeth II, former US Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, actor Emma Watson, Nobel winner Malala Yousafzai, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and singers Taylor Swift and Madonna. Indian actresses Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone were 11th, 12th and 13th, respectively.
The survey was conducted by YouGov, a London-based market research company. It says it had gathered open-ended nominations from panellists across 35 countries, asking them about men and women still living that they most admire. Lists of 20 each for men and women were then compiled based on most nominations and were nominated in at least four countries. YouGov further says that another 10 popular local figures were added from individual countries before the final two lists were prepared.
"Altogether, we polled in countries that constitute more than two-thirds of the world's population. However, some parts of the world were better represented than others, so we weighted up the impact certain countries had on the final scores and weighted down others so the global scores more accurately reflect the breakdown of sentiment in the world overall, said YouGov.
"All of the surveys were conducted online, and in many of the countries the internet penetration is low to the point where the sample can only be said to be representative to the online population. The countries where the online population is lower than 60% of the total are Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Morocco, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Africa, Thailand and Vietnam."
