During an hour long discussion, the Special Representative briefed Under Secretary Otero on the situation of Tibet issue in Europe, underscoring the problems and challenges faced, and made some important points of suggestion for consideration.
From her part, the US Special Coordinator for Tibet issue highlighted the key issues and concerns of the US administration regarding Tibet and assured her continued support.
Under Secretary Maria Otero was appointed as the Special Coordinator for Tibet issues on October 1, 2009, by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The first Special Coordinator for Tibet Issues was appointed in 1997, which was later mandated by the Tibetan Policy Act of 2002 indicating United State's commitment to a negotiated resolution on Tibet that preserves the distinct religious, cultural and linguistic heritage of the Tibetan people.
