Dharamsala: Phul Chong, a famous Tibetan singer, recently fled his home following news of the Chinese Government's pursuit to arrest him. The singer, popular amongst his home crowd, recently sang about His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Dr. Lobsang Sangay, the Kalon Tripa.
In his song- which can be translated as " Our Good Lama"- he described His Holiness the Dalai Lama sitting on golden throne and called him a Tibetan saviour. He went on to describe Dr. Lobsang Sangay, the Tibetans' political leader, sitting on silver throne. He also sang about the Tibetran's people's happiness and sadness. The song was mainly about the feelings and experiences of Tibetans.
The Chinese Governemnet alleges that, through his song, he broke national unity and then wanted to arrest him. When Phul Chong got wind of his arrest, he took to his heels and is now in hiding.
Phul Chong is born in Amchok village in the Marthang district (Chinese: Hongyuan) of Amdo. He comes from a nomad family and is educated at the middle school level. He is said to have trained himself while grazing yaks. He has five albums to his name and a recurrent theme in his albums is Tibetan national pride. Popular amongst the nomads as he expresses their sentiments, many Tibetan people are said to call him "Pride Singer".
The Chinese Government, has strictly followed a "One Child Policy" (Tibet, with a population of 4.5 million, is regarded as a "minority nationality" and is therefore, in theory, exempt from the provisions of family planning legislation. In practice, however, "voluntary" birth control has been actively promoted in Tibetan towns since the early-1980s). When Phul Chong was concieved, it is said that the Chinese authorities tried to unsuccessfully abort him and as a result, he was born without four fingers on his left hand. song
