11november20091Dharamsala, India: The Tibetan Department of Education in exile yesterday opened a ten-day workshop for English language teachers of the Sambhota Tibetan Schools Society, with the aim of improving their teaching skills.

Fourteen Tibetan teachers are participating, with the help of Anthony Harvey London, an expert in English teaching and recipient of the Australian National Medal.

The Tibetan education department has a three-language policy, with Tibetan language as the teaching medium up to class three, the addition of English from class four and a third language from class five.

In a press release, education officer Tsering Phuntsok commented, "The department of education felt the urgency to provide in-service teacher training to all primary English teachers. It would not be doing justice if teachers continue with the teaching methodology as was done in the pre-primary classes."

On Monday, the education department also began a six-day orientation programme for 24 primary school teachers, aimed at familiarizing them with basic education policy.
